What Type of a Relationship Do You Have With Your Luxury Watches?

Very few luxury watch enthusiasts consider buying luxury watches just another expensive purchase. The collectors like to call it a hobby, a horological passion, the pragmatists call it an investment, while some others call it an act of love.
That’s the fun part about buying luxury watches. There’s no wrong answer about how you’d like to put it. Labels don’t matter. What matters is your intention, and the type of relationship you share with your watches.
So, with Valentine's month almost wrapped up, it’s time we stop asking “what’s your type?”.
It’s an overused question and you’ve got better things to do. Like, adding that luxury watch you can’t stop thinking about onto your bucket list, or scrolling down to figure out the answer to an important question;
“What type are you?”
1. The Romantic Type
Anyone who has been buying luxury watches for love would agree that they have felt like a lovestruck romantic, even for a short while. We’ve all had that one luxury watch that made us stop and stare, feel a buzzing connection.
And, while buying luxury watches can be pretty addicting, it’s not unheard of that people find their ‘special one’ and choose to stay committed to that one for a really long time. So, ask yourself; “Do I have a special connection to a particular timepiece in my collection?” “Do I have that one watch I save for special occasions?” “Do I have that one watch I would preserve like my life depends on it?”
Well, if the answer to these questions is yes, there you have it. You are the romantic type!
2. The Casanova Type
It’s pretty ironic how some luxury watches can be limited in numbers and hard to get your hands on, yet the sheer multifarity in options can drive watch lovers absolutely insane.
Cue, The Casanova Type. They love the options, like to play the field and keep coming back to it for more. They love the high that the experience of luxury watch buying brings them. They fancy the pride and exhilaration that comes with owning a timepiece that sits just right on their wrist.
But that’s what it is; a high and an infatuation, soon to douse down as something new and shiny catches their eye.
If you find yourself identifying with these characteristics, well, what can we say? The temptation is real, and love is love - no matter how fleeting it is!
3. The Nostalgic Type
Luxury watches have a crafty habit of becoming a part of important legacies. History and heritage also seem to find a way of cosying up to many luxury timepieces.
It comes with the charm, perhaps, and for the Nostalgic Type, it’s impossible to resist.
These are the ones that both love like a romantic and play the field like a Casanova, but with an eagle’s eye. They are always on the lookout for something very specific, chasing the rarest of the rare, wanting to own not just a watch but also the time that the watch has survived.
And, they persevere. Oh boy, they do, to get exactly the piece of heritage they want on their collection. It’s absolutely understandable. To get your hands on a vintage Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, wouldn’t you work hard to the moon and back?
Sounds relatable to you? Congratulations, you’ve found your type!
4. The Flashy/ Pretentious Type
This one’s pretty self-explanatory. We all have a natural tick that makes us awe at flashy and exuberant things. The Flashy Type just happens to own up to it with pride.
For this type, all that glitters better be gold, or even better, diamonds! They’re the type who would choose the Rolex Rainbow Daytona with pave-set diamonds over the regular one. They settle for nothing less than magnificently luxurious and leave no (precious) stone unturned in boasting it for its worth.

5. The Geek Type
To anyone who couldn’t relate to the above types at all, because for you luxury watches are all about substance over superficial, you might want to check this one out.
The Geek Type includes those who look at their watches for more than what meets the eye. They are particularly fascinated by complications and crazy about the details, the technicalities, the process, the craftsmanship, and the entire horology of the timepiece.

6. The Loyal Type

It could be consistent performance, jaw-dropping designs, or even just the brand value that makes you stick. Whatever the reason, this type stays committed to expanding their collection within the same brand.
Do your eyes twinkle when your favourite brand announces the release of a new timepiece? Do you not bat a lash when any other brand announces any timepiece?
All we can say is, good going, buddy. Loyalty is a good trait to have!
7. The Experimental Type
If you couldn’t relate to any of the above types, you would probably relate to this one.
The Experimental Type likes to romance a good luxury watch every now and then, but commitment is not in their nature – not to the watch, not to the brand. True to the name, they like to experiment with different styles, designs, technologies, and brands.
And, while they may not pick favourites, they sure do love every timepiece they own for the unique personal connection they establish with them.
